Citing the booming technology sector and other company expansions includng Apple Inc., Seton HealthCare Family and General Motors Co., local economist Angelos Angelou revised the number of jobs he projects the Austin area will see by the end of the year — from 19,000 to 25,000.

The Austin-area unemployment rate dropped to 5.5% in April – down from 6% in March, according to Workforce Solutions Capital Area Workforce Board. The unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in more than three years. Austin added 6,300 jobs in April pushing the 12-month gain to 19,700.

Austin ranks number one among the nation’s 50 largest metro areas in job growth over the past eight years. Its 140,200 new jobs represented a 21.3 percent increase from the start of 2004, which put it well ahead of second-place Houston, which had 15.7 percent job growth.

San Jose, CA-based SunPower Corp., leader in solar technology, announced plans to invest $10 million to establish a new U.S. operations facility in Austin, Texas. The company is expected to create 450 jobs over the next four years. The Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) is supporting the expansion with a $2.5 million investment.
